Tired of paying for your Starbucks eggnog latte? Make your own eggnog latte at home with this super easy recipe! You only need a few ingredients and a few minutes.

*Please note* this post was originally published in 2017 but I’ve since redone the text and added a video. The recipe remains the same.

Hi! How was your Christmas?! The day might be over and done, but I’m still listening to Christmas music and I refuse to take down any decorations until the New Year – it’s still the holiday season!

I spent most of Christmas day in the kitchen, first making breakfast, then lunch, then the whole turkey shebang. I am SO grateful that my Mom was here to help with all of the dishes and most importantly, the gravy. Everything turned out great – including that bundt cake I talked about.

All that hustle and bustle in the kitchen meant I needed a little shot of caffeine in the afternoon! Lucky for me, I’ve perfected the eggnog latte this season! If you like the Starbucks eggnog lattes this time of year, you’ll love this homemade version.

A homemade eggnog latte is the easiest thing to make – and sooo much cheaper than one from Starbucks.

Ingredients for Eggnog Latte

Another great reason to make your own latte at home? You only need a handful of ingredients, and no special equipment!

You’ll need the following for this eggnog latte:

  • instant espresso powder
  • boiling water
  • eggnog
  • maple syrup
  • cinnamon
  • whipped cream (optional)

Instant espresso powder: I love to use the Nescafe brand but you can use your favourite brand. I often have this on hand and not even just for homemade lattes! I love to add espresso powder to my chocolate cakes, like this mini chocolate cake.

Eggnog: I like to use regular, full fat eggnog. You can also use light eggnog, or a dairy free alternative; however, the dairy free versions may not foam up quite as nicely as the dairy version. I have noticed in my experimenting that the oat milk variety of eggnog tends to create the most foam!

Whipped cream: This is obviously optional, but I highly recommend it! It’s the perfect touch to make you feel like you just ordered a fancy coffee from the shops!

How to Make An Eggnog Latte at Home

I know you’re wondering about that steamed eggnog part about the latte. Easy. Here are the directions for creating your very own latte at home!

1. Add the espresso powder into the bottom of your latte glass. Make sure you choose a glass that allows for the volume of liquid you’ll be using!

2. In a small pot on the stove, heat the eggnog, maple syrup, and cinnamon over medium-high heat until steaming hot (but before boiling). You’ll see steam and very small bubbles but the mixture won’t be full on bubbling away. As you start to see the steam coming from the eggnog, begin boiling your water. I’m lucky enough to have an instant boiling water tap, but feel free to use your electric or stovetop kettle!

3. Pour the hot eggnog mixture into a milk frother, if using, or a small glass mason jar. Froth up the eggnog in the mason jar by shaking the jar vigorously until you see a thick layer of foam.

Caution: Make sure the lid of the mason jar is TIGHTLY closed before you start shaking. You might even want to wear an oven mitt as the hot eggnog will cause the jar to heat up as well. You must also b

4. Once the water starts boiling, pour 4 ounces of boiling water on top of the espresso powder in your latte cup, give it a quick stir, then immediately pour the hot eggnog mixture on top. Finish off the latte with whipped cream and more cinnamon and nutmeg, if you so desire!

Pro Tip: A homemade eggnog latte is all about the timing.  You want to time your water to boil at the same time as your milk steams/froths up. I like to measure out the espresso powder first, then turn the kettle on for the water as soon as I see my eggnog become steaming hot.

Do You Have to Use a Milk Brother to Make a Homemade Latte?

As per the directions above, you can get a fantastic homemade latte just using a mason jar! I was given a manual Bodum milk frother for Christmas one year and I love to use it for my homemade lattes, but if you don’t have one, you don’t need one! You could also use a handheld electric milk frother or a super fancy milk frother like this one from Nespresso.

Honestly, don’t fret too much about the frother. Using the mason jar works very well!

Since eggnog has been on the shelves, I’ve been making these on a regular basis. I hope you get a chance to try one out before eggnog disappears until next year!!

  2. Froth up the hot eggnog using a milk frother (if using) our pour the hot eggnog into a small glass mason jar. Tightly close the lid on the mason jar. Froth up the eggnog in the mason jar by shaking the jar vigorously until you see a thick layer of foam.***

  1. I love that Santa left his hat at your house :). I’m not usually a sweet coffee person but I can definitely do an eggnog latte once in awhile. Is there anything more festive this time of year? Your Christmas sounds just perfect (and I’m a little jealous of that cider/fireball thing too. I might have to try it today!)
