Satisfy that craving instantly with this 3 minute chocolate chip banana mug cake! This is definitely the best use for that one ripe banana on the counter. A tasty, easy, banana bread mug cake for 1!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted a new mug cake on the blog! While this chocolate chip banana mug cake is not ONLY 3 ingredients like my famous chocolate mug cake, it’s equally as simple and 100% as delicious!
Don’t you often find that you have only one super ripe banana on the counter and you’re not sure what to do with it? I mean, if you have 2 or 3 that can easily be turned into banana bread or banana muffins, but just 1? I’ve got the perfect solution!
A chocolate chip banana mug cake!
What exactly is a mug cake?
Chances are, if you ever peruse Pinterest you would have come across the term “mug cake”. Basically, it’s the laziest cake ever (yay)! A mug cake is a few ingredients whisked together and placed into a literal coffee mug, or even a smaller mason jar and then microwaved for a couple of minutes.
There are so many ideas in the world for different mug cake flavors! I love a basic chocolate one but this banana bread mug cake is right up there. There is something so comforting about banana bread!
Is this mug cake healthy?
As always, the answer to this totally depends on how you define the term “healthy”. Usually when you think of cake, you’d think of sugar and fat and frosting (and deliciousness); therefore, considering this mug cake uses maple syrup and and banana to sweeten and contains only 1 tablespoon of butter, I would definitely consider this a win!
I guess you do have to take into consideration the chocolate chips 😉
What ingredients do you need for this chocolate chip banana mug cake?
I wish I could make this another 3 ingredient recipe but to get the texture just right I needed to add a bit more! For this recipe you’ll need:
- mashed banana (just one)
- unsalted butter
- maple syrup
- egg
- baking soda
- all-purpose flour
- chocolate chips
How do you make a banana mug cake?
In a few simple steps (and in only a few minutes) you’ll have a delicious banana bread flavoured cake waiting for you!
1. In a large mug or medium-sized mason jar, melt the butter in the microwave for 20 seconds.
2. To the mug, add the maple syrup and egg and whisk thoroughly. Add the mashed banana and whisk again until there are no large banana lumps.
3. Add in the flour and baking soda and whisk again until there are no dry flour streaks. Stir in the chocolate chips.
4. Place the mug in the microwave and heat it up for 2 minutes on high. Check it after 2 minutes and and if it still looks wet and not caked enough, microwave it for another 30 minutes on high.
5. Add whipped cream and additional chocolate chips to the top and dig in! Just be careful not to burn your mouth.
What can you top a banana mug cake with?
My favourite topping for this mug cake is whipped cream! And more chocolate chips. You definitely don’t need any topping at all as it’s delicious on its own, BUT some other ideas are:
- Nutella (homemade works too)!
- salted caramel sauce
- ice cream
- low-fat Greek yogurt
- chocolate shavings
- cinnamon sprinkles
The options are endless!
