So, have you jumped on the air fryer train yet? They seem to be gaining popularity these days! I have to say as much as I do love mine, I don’t use it as much as I probably could. Whenever I do use it, I always think I need to use it more!

One thing that I’ve been using it for lately on the weekends is for these home fries! They turn out SO crispy and perfect. A little fluffy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside. Potato perfection!

Are you the type of person that loves eating the same thing every day for breakfast? Or do you like switching things up? I am all about switching it up and eating something different each day. Oatmeal, granola and yogurt, avo toast, scrambled eggs, you name it. On the weekends, we usually do sweet breakfast one morning and then a savory one the next day. For our savory breakfast we often go for some crispy potatoes! Served up with bacon and eggs!

What are home fries?

If you’ve ever been to a diner, you will have had home fries! They’re big cubes of crispy, fluffy potatoes with a bit of seasoning. Basically, they’re amazing. Some do call them hash browns, but when I think of hash browns I think of shredded potatoes (also delicious).

Home fries are traditionally cooked in a skillet, but there are a ton of ways you can cook them. In the oven, on the stovetop or boiled up in a pot and then crisped up.

Now that we’ve got another tool in the kitchen, air fryer home fries are born!

How do you make home fries in the air fryer?

Start by dicing up the potatoes into 1″ cubes. I typically always buy yellow potatoes for this but you can definitely use the red potatoes as well. Personally, I find the flesh of the yellow potato much creamier!

You can peel your potatoes but I prefer to keep the skin on.

To ensure we get these potatoes totally perfectly cooked, we’re first going to boil them in pot of water for 5-6 minute, or until just fork-tender. Boiling them first will help you get that super soft inside!

Drain the potatoes and then allow them to cool off while you heat up the air fryer to 350 F and dice an onion into medium-sized chunks.

Drizzle some melted butter on the potatoes, add the seasonings and then add them to the air fryer. Cook the potatoes for 7-8 minutes before opening the air fryer, giving the potatoes a shake, and adding the onion.

Cook the potatoes for another 6-7 minutes and then check them with a fork to ensure they’re done. Voila! Crispy, delicious air fryer home fries!

What do you serve home fries with?

We love eating these just as they are, but we also love adding scrambled eggs or a yolky egg on top. You can also throw in some diced peppers, mushrooms, bacon or anything else that sounds good to you.

You can also make a giant batch of these and freeze some. These home fries will lose their crispiness when stored in the fridge, but all you have to do is heat them up for a bit in either the oven, at 300 F for 10 minutes, or in a skillet on the stovetop. I like using my cast iron for this!

Enjoy!

Love homemade home fries but hate how long they can take? Try these air fryer home fries and they’ll be ready in no time! Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs yellow potatoes, 1″ cubes
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced

Instructions

  1. Add the cubed potatoes to a large pot filled with water over medium-high heat on the stove. Bring the pot of water to a boil, then reduce it to a simmer for 5-6 minutes or until the potatoes are slightly firmer than fork-tender. Drain the potatoes completely and spread them out on a baking sheet to allow them to cool.
  2. Preheat the air fryer to 350 F. Drizzle the potatoes with the melted butter, sea salt and paprika and toss to coat. Add the potatoes to the air fryer in a single layer. If you’re unable to add them all, you’ll have to air fry the potatoes in batches. Cook the potatoes for 7-8 minutes. Open the lid, shake the potatoes, add the onions and cook for another 6-7 minutes or until fork-tender and soft, and crispy on the outside. Serve immediately.

Leftovers will last for 4-5 days in the fridge. Reheat them in the oven at 300 F for 10 minutes or in a skillet on the stove, until crispy again.
