These kefir overnight oats are a fun change to a favourite breakfast! You only need a few simple ingredients to prepare overnight oats with kefir milk to last you all week!

I know, I know. Overnight oats have been around for a LONG time now so this is not a revolutionary idea, BUT have you thought about trying them with kefir milk before!? I have been trying to incorporate more fermented foods into my diet these days, so I started drinking kefir with my bran cereal in the morning (yes, I’m an old woman).

It was only recently that I had the idea of making kefir overnight oats! It was terrific! I love the tang of the kefir in the morning and the topping combinations are endless. You could even try a lemon poppy seed version like these overnight oats.

What Is Kefir Milk?

Well, straight from this WebMD article, kefir, pronounced kee-feer, is a drink made from the fermented milk from a cow, goat, or sheep.  Its health benefits come from many different species of probiotics that it contains! These little bacteria are great for your digestive system.

While similar to yogurt, kefir has both yeast and bacteria, while yogurt only contains the good bacteria. Kefir is also thinner and drinkable! Basically a thick milk, which makes it perfect as our liquid in an overnight oats recipe.

Ingredients in Kefir Overnight Oats

In these simple oats, you’ll need the following:

  • rolled oats
  • maple syrup
  • chia seeds
  • kefir

Rolled oats: I highly recommend large flake, rolled oats for this recipe. I have not tried this with steel cut oats but it should work fine, although you might have to let the mixture soak for longer to avoid crunchy oats. Using quick oats may make the consistency too mushy.

Maple syrup: Feel free to substitute with honey or agave syrup.

Directions for Overnight Oats

My favourite recipes are simple ones like this. Follow these steps for these kefir overnight oats:

1. In a medium sized mason jar or other container, stir together the rolled oats, maple syrup, chia seeds and kefir.

2. Place the lid on the jar or container and place the mixture into the fridge for at least 6 hours, or overnight.

3. When you’re ready to enjoy the oats in the morning, remove the lid and top the oats with berries, chocolate chips, chopped nuts, a drizzle of honey, or a sprinkle of cinnamon. The possibilities are endless! My daughter loves sprinkles on her oats.

How Long Can Kefir Overnight Oats Stay In The Fridge?

I have kept a single jar of these overnight oats in the fridge, sealed with the lid, for 5 days and still enjoyed them! I wouldn’t keep them longer than 5 days to be safe, but they held up really well and the oats weren’t mushy!

If you’re adding toppings like fresh fruit and nuts, I would add those just before enjoying the oats, rather than keeping them sealed as these toppings will likely become mushy!

Note: Always be sure you’re using kefir that will not be expiring over the next couple of days if you plan to make this recipe to last in the fridge for the week.

Recipe Tips

Try using strawberry flavoured kefir for a fun twist on the taste, or any other flavour they sell at the store.

Plan ahead and make this recipe x5 so you have breakfast every day of the work week!
