So, how have you guys been liking my 3-ingredient recipes? I hope you love them because I have SO many more ideas for them! It’s been fun developing them, especially during this time of craziness when I have less time on my hands.

While this particular dinner recipe isn’t a 3-ingredient recipe, it IS a 30-minute recipe! Which in itself is pretty great, don’t you think? I’ve made something like this a few times in the past but I just recently decided to actually write down the recipe. And I’m so glad I did! I think you guys will love it.

Do you use hoisin sauce much?

I never used to, it was always just that mysterious bottle of dark liquid at the Vietnamese restaurants I’d frequent. But the past few years I’ve been incorporating it a lot into my dinners, and even just over plain rice sometimes. It’s fairly sweet so my kids gobble it up too!

This hoisin beef is a mixture of hoisin sauce and some other Asian-inspired ingredients, and it’s a wonderful, sweet and slightly sticky sauce that clings to ground beef and rice. You’ll love it!

What’s in a hoisin beef bowl?

The WONDERFUL thing about these bowls is that you can have so much fun with the toppings. The base of the dish is ground beef, browned with some minced garlic and sautéed shallots. I like using shallots here because I don’t want the flavor of onion to overpower the dish, plus we only need a little bit so a shallot is perfect! If you don’t have one on hand, you can swap it for a bit of diced onion.

The sauce itself will only take you a few minutes to whip together. It’s made of:

  • hoisin sauce
  • oyster sauce
  • rice wine vinegar
  • soy sauce
  • honey
  • sesame oil
  • fresh ginger
  • red pepper flakes

I usually prepare the sauce as the beef is beginning to brown, since that will take about 10 minutes.

Once the beef is cooked, throw in the sauce, toss it all together and serve!

Easy, peasy.

What do you serve these hoisin beef bowls with?

We pretty much always serve this with rice (basmati is my fave) but we have switched it up too. Here’s a few other ideas:

  • quinoa
  • bed of greens (try a mix of arugula and spinach)
  • couscous
  • coconut rice

As for toppings, we love, love crushed peanuts and some green onion. Try a few of these ideas too:

  • radish
  • cilantro
  • julienned carrots
  • sautéed cabbage
  • cashews

Can you freeze this meal for later?

This dinner is perfectly freezable! Once prepared, let it cool completely, then freeze it (along with some rice, if desired) in an airtight container for up to 2 months. Let it thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating either in the microwave or in the oven, covered, for about 20 minutes at 350.

We love easy dinners like this one. I hope you guys love it too!

Happy weekend!

Description

You’ll love these saucy hoisin beef bowls garnished with fresh vegetables and crushed nuts! This Asian ground beef recipe is full of flavor and takes less than 30 minutes to make!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 shallot, finely diced (sub 1/4 yellow onion)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef (I use lean)

Sauce

  • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1” fresh shredded ginger
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

Optional Garnishes

  • sesame seeds
  • crushed peanuts
  • green onions
  • cilantro
  • shredded carrots
  • radish

Instructions

  1.  In a large pan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the minced shallot and sauté for about 5 minutes, before adding the garlic and cooking for an additional minute. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, about 10 minutes.
  2. While the beef is cooking, prepare the sauce. (You will probably want to start your rice around this time too). Whisk together the hoisin and oyster sauce along with the rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, shredded ginger and red pepper flakes.
  3. Once the beef is browned, add the sauce and stir fry for another minute until thoroughly combined. Serve immediately over rice, or other base. Top with sesame seeds, peanuts, green onions, etc.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container, for 2-3 days or kept in the freezer for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating either in the microwave or in the oven at 350 for 20 minutes.

The beef bowl looks so perfectly made with sauteed shallots instead of onion. And 30 mins sounds great. I must find some Hoisin sauce to begin with. Amazing recipe again.
