It’s no secret I’m a fan of turkey sandwiches. This is my 4th one on the blog! As much as I love a turkey dinner, I love the leftovers even more! The possibilities for that leftover meat are endless! Turkey pesto sandwich, cranberry turkey sandwich, leftover turkey stuffing casserole and more!
This grilled buffalo turkey sandwich is the newest member of the family. My husband likes this one in particular for the heat and flavour of the buffalo sauce! If you’re a fan of buffalo hot wings you’ll definitely like this sandwich.
What Do You Need to Make This Buffalo Turkey Sandwich?
If you’ve already got leftover turkey from a holiday dinner, then you’re halfway there! If you don’t have leftover turkey on hand, you can also cook a turkey breast on the stove or in the oven and use the meat from that. Alternatively, buy pre-cooked turkey breast from the grocery store!
For this sandwich you’ll need the following:
- 100 grams cooked turkey breast, in small pieces
- 2 tbsp buffalo hot sauce
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 slices French bread
- 2 tbsp ranch dressing
- 1 large slice cheddar cheese
- 1 large slice Monterey Jack cheese
- 1 tbsp diced chives
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, room temperature
You can make this sandwich with store-bought pre-cooked turkey breast as well, if you aren’t lucky enough to have leftover turkey in your fridge! Although, the next time you have a big holiday dinner, I highly recommend keeping this sandwich in mind!
Instructions for Making This Grilled Turkey Sandwich:
1. In a medium pan on the stove, add the precooked turkey breast, buffalo hot sauce and butter over medium heat. Cook and stir together using a wooden spatula for 3-4 minutes or until the turkey is warm and fully incorporated with the sauce. The sauce should get slightly thicker as it cooks with the turkey.
2. Remove the turkey and wipe out the pan. Place the two slices of bread on a cutting board. Use a table knife to add the ranch dressing to both sides of the bread.
3. Add all of the cheese slices to one side of the bread, followed by the cooked turkey. Scatter the chives on top of the turkey. Place the other slice of bread on top, then butter the top of the bread. Flip the sandwich over and butter the other side.
4. Place the sandwich in the pan, and heat the pan to low-medium heat. If you have a lid, cover the pan to ensure the cheese gets melted!
5. Fry the sandwich for 4-5 minutes on one side or until golden brown, then flip it over and fry it on the other side until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately!
Substitutions and Variations
Cheese: You can absolutely change the type of cheese in this sandwich if you have a strong preference for a different kind. I like the combination of cheddar and Monterey Jack for the flavour and that it gets nice and melty!
Bread: This sandwich is just as delicious with sourdough bread or another type of bread, if there is one that you prefer or if you have something different on hand.
Ranch Dressing: You can omit the ranch dressing if you’re not a fan, but it does add great flavour to the sandwich. You could use Caesar dressing, mayo or just skip it altogether and lightly butter the inside of the bread instead.
Can You Double the Recipe to Feed a Crowd?
Absolutely! Double or even triple the measurements outlined in the recipe card to feed as many people as you need. You can fry extra turkey in the buffalo sauce and butter to make sure you have enough to make multiple sandwiches.
These would even be good as a party sandwich, if you cut the sandwiches into 4’s.
