Easter looks a bit different this year, since we’re currently taking a little vacation in Palm Springs! We took my Mom along too and I have to say its been very nice having an extra adult – we’re no longer outnumbered by tiny humans!

Anyway, usually we have a turkey for Easter, or at least turkey in some form. We’ve had a turkey roll before and it was delicious too. Since we’re not at home, we can still have turkey in a different form, this time in the form of this melty cheddar and apple turkey sandwich!

What do you need to make an apple turkey sandwich?

This sandwich comes together in a snap! You’ll need the following ingredients:

  • sourdough bread
  • mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • white cheddar cheese
  • Gala apple
  • turkey meat
  • honey
  • softened butter

What kind of turkey should you use for this sandwich?

I always have thinly sliced roast turkey deli meat on hand in the fridge for our sandwiches and wraps, so that’s what I’ve used here in this sandwich. If you’re looking to use up some of your giant turkey from Easter, you can absolutely use a few slices of cooked turkey meat! I prefer the dark meat but white meat would also be terrific in this.

What type of apple is best for sandwiches?

Gala is a safe bet to use in most sandwiches since the flavor is fairly sweet and mild and they’re almost always crisp! I also like to use a crisp green apple when I’m slicing apple for a sandwich. Crisp and slightly tart is a great way to go when choosing your apple.

You’ll want to slice the apple very thin, about 1/8″ to 1/4″ inch thick.

Instructions for making this apple turkey sandwich:

  1. Start by laying out two slices of sourdough bread. Gently distribute 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise across the two slices, then follow that with the Dijon mustard, on top of the mayonnaise.
  2. Place the white cheddar cheese in a single layer on one slice of bread, followed by a single layer of sliced apple. Top the apple with deli meat, then drizzle the honey on top.

3. Place the second piece of bread on top of the fillings, then spread the top of the bread with 1 tablespoon of softened butter.

4. Heat a frying pan on the stove over medium heat and place the sandwich, buttered side down, into the pan. Butter the top of the bread with the remaining butter. Cover the frying pan with a lid and cook for 3-4 minutes or until lightly toasted on the bottom.

5. Flip the sandwich carefully and cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese is softened and gooey. Remove the sandwich to a cutting board, cut it in half and serve immediately.

What do you serve an apple turkey sandwich with?

If you’re turning this sandwich into a complete meal, the best sides would be:

You also can’t go wrong with some raw veggies on the side!

Can you double the recipe to feed a crowd?

Absolutely! Double or even triple the measurements outlined in the recipe card to feed as many people as you need. Kids or those with a smaller appetite would probably only eat one half of the recipe as its written, as sourdough bread slices are usually quite large!

Note: You can use any type of bread for this sandwich, although the recipe is written to accommodate a larger bread such as sourdough. If you’re not a fan, you could also try my homemade 3 ingredient bread or even my beer bread.
