This super easy ravioli bake is the perfect weeknight meal. Use store-bought ravioli to keep things simple, and have dinner on the table in no time!

Since we’re back in the swing of busy September nights, and my 3 ingredient cheesy tortellini bake is one of my top posts, it just made sense to create something else that would be just as loved so I made this ravioli bake! Pasta is always a win, and ravioli is just a special sort of pasta, isn’t it? Since sausage also seems to always be a hit with my kids, I knew I wanted to include it in this dish!

I can honestly tell you my whole family loved this sausage ravioli bake!! Cheesy, saucy and delicious! Plus it’s only a handful of ingredients, and you guys all know I love uncomplicated dinner recipes!

What ingredients do you need for this sausage ravioli bake?

As promised, the ingredient list for this easy dinner is short and sweet:

  • olive oil
  • yellow onion
  • garlic
  • ground sausage
  • oregano
  • salt
  • pasta sauce
  • mozzarella cheese
  • cheese ravioli
  • parmesan cheese

You can use any ravioli you like, although something filled with beef might conflict with the sausage. I like to use a cheese ravioli as it goes with any type of meat. I would also recommend a marinara sauce for this recipe, but any tomato pasta sauce will work just fine! I love this one from Costco.

My favourite Italian sausage is a spicy chorizo, but you may want to use something more mild if you’re feeding kids, or just plain ground pork will work too!

How do you make this easy ravioli bake?

This dinner takes about 1 hour from start to finish, so account for that before you start. I like to have all of my ingredients prepped and ready to go, you can even do that part the night before!

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Add olive oil to a large pan over medium heat on the stove. Sauté the onion for 4-5 minutes or until it begins to turn translucent. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute, before adding in the ground pork, oregano and salt. Cook the sausage until entirely browned, with no pink, about 6-7 minutes. Break up the meat with a large wooden spoon as you cook it.

2. To the same mixture, pour in the pasta sauce and stir to combine. In an 11 x 7 baking pan, spread half of the sausage mixture evenly over the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese over the bottom of the sausage mixture, then layer half of the ravioli from the package on top of the cheese. It’s ok if the ravioli doesn’t touch close together.

3. Repeat the layers one more time, finishing with an extra sprinkle of mozzarella cheese over the top of the last layer of ravioli. Sprinkle the parmesan cheese over the top of the mozzarella. Spray a large piece of tinfoil with nonstick spray, then place the sprayed side of the foil over the casserole dish, tightly pinching the edges around the dish.

4. Bake the casserole in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until bubbling. Remove the foil from the top of the dish, turn the oven to broil and bake for another 1-2 minutes or until brown and bubbly. Take the casserole dish out of the oven and place on the counter to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Do you have to boil the ravioli before baking it?

No! That’s the beauty of this dish. No additional cooking before creating this dish, as the pasta will soften up and bake from the steam of the foil-covered casserole.

Can you make this sausage ravioli bake ahead of time?

Absolutely! As I mentioned in the instructions above, you could prepare the ingredients ahead of time, but you could also make the whole actual casserole ahead of time. Another option would be to just cook the sausage, onions and garlic and add the tomato sauce, then store this in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the dish.

My preference would be to fully assemble the whole casserole and store it in the fridge, covered until you’re ready to bake. Bake for 45 minutes as the dish would need to fully warm up after being in the fridge.

You can also bake the entire dish, then let it cool to room temperature before storing it in the freezer for up to 2 months, covered in foil. Thaw the dinner overnight in the fridge, before baking for up to 1 hour in the fridge.

Description

This super easy ravioli bake is the perfect weeknight meal. Use store-bought ravioli to keep things simple, and have dinner on the table in no time!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb ground pork sausage*
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 jar (600mL) marinara sauce
  • 2 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 package (around 600grams) ravioli**
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and spray an 11 x 7″ baking dish with nonstick spray. Add the olive oil to a large pan over medium heat on the stove. Add the onion, then sauté for 4-5 minutes or until it begins to turn translucent. Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute, before adding in the ground pork, oregano and salt. Cook the sausage until entirely browned and no pink remains, about 6-7 minutes. Break up the meat with a large wooden spoon as you cook it.
  2. To the same mixture, pour in the pasta sauce and stir to combine. Remove from heat. Spread half of the sausage mixture evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Sprinkle 1 cup of the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the sausage mixture, followed by half of the ravioli from the package (it’s ok if the pasta is not touching each other).

Leftovers, once cooled, can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge. The casserole can also be stored in the freezer, for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then bake the casserole (covered) for an hour at 350 F.

Notes

*I like spicy Italian chorizo but feel free to use any ground pork, even plain

**I recommend using cheese-filled ravioli or sausage filled so as not to conflict with the ground sausage
